The South African State Theatre in association with Sold Out Media and media partner Mzansi Magic Music brings you a once in a lifetime experience to see Ladysmith Black Mambazo, 5-time Grammy Award winning group in Pretoria

Ladysmith Black Mambazo first came together in the early 1960s under the guidance of its founder Professor Joseph Shabalala. His inspiration for the group came to him in a dream in which a choir of children sang and danced. Shabalala soon transformed that dream into real life by forming Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

He introduced a new style and movement of Isicathamiya music. He made Isicathamiya music fashionable and created prominence in the entertainment industry. Isicathamiya became dominant and more groups stated following in Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s footsteps.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo are the pioneers of Isicathamiya, and are the oldest group in South Africa, making it big locally and internationally. Having won 5 Grammy Awards and being nominated more than 18 times makes them one of the best groups in the world!

From the beginning of their journey they took South African music industry by storm, being the first group to go Gold!

The group released hit tracks like Nomathemba and many more which quickly made them the most popular music group in South Africa. Their music then started to reach all corners of the African continent and later became a global authority on African harmonies. It is for that reason they started collaborating with world’s greatest artists, like Paul Simon who exposed them to a global market.

After their participation on Graceland album the world became their oyster and they started touring intensively. They later collaborated with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Michele Jackson, The Winans, Dolly Parton and many others. Ladysmith Black Mambazo were featured in  Hollywood movies like “Coming to America”. They inspired many young musicians in America including Take 6 and many others.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo are a true ambassadors of South African music, culture and heritage. The music of Ladysmith Black Mambazo is about spreading the message of peace, love and harmony throughout the world.

The group is also working on discovering fresh talent through their program called Ladysmith mobile academy. The creation of the academy is the group’s way of giving back to the community of South Africa. This is a way of discovering fresh talent and to promote indigenous music to young and aspiring artists. Ladysmith Black Mambazo is planning to do a 60th anniversary in 2020. The group will be touring the world celebrating the journey well-travelled and their success in the music industry.
